Subtle Psoas, Supple Psoas

Deep in the body twin serpents lie, hugging the lumbar spine. These serpents are the psoas muscles, one left, one right. Once dismissed with a cursory note in the anatomical texts as a hip flexor, the psoas has now been attributed with almost mystical signficance by some, but even in main stream physiology, is better understood for the complex service it offers to our body.

Being very deep it can be asleep, our somatic awareness scarcely touching upon it. It can also be chronically contracted by traumatic experiences, depression, or just habitual posture, and such a situation will undermine our entire health.

Atrophied psoas muscles may contribute to:

  • back pain
  • pelvic pain
  • knee pain
  • anxiety
  • depression

In this workshop we will meet and greet the twin serpents, soften them, moisten them, release and lengthen them and prepare to strengthen them, learning along the way how the connective relationships they form with other muscles and structures make them such an important muscle worthy of our loving attention.

A healthy psoas will allow you to:

  • walk tall
  • hold yourself erect and straight
  • release emotions and traumas
  • feel strong and connected
  • soothe and perhaps eliminate lower back pain

About Tina Shettigara, workshop presenter

Tina has been studying yoga and meditation since the 1970s and has been a yoga teacher since 2009 having trained with Rebecca Richards. She then undertook a 21-day Advanced Teacher Training with Donna Farhi, author of many respected yoga texts, most recently Pathways to a Centered Body, in which she and co-author Leila Stuart publish their long collaboration and exploration of this muscle and its allies. In this workshop Tina draws upon their work and insights she has also gained through her training in Somatics and explorations in her own body and working with her students.
