Celebrating 21 years of serving the Adelaide Yoga community
The many health benefits of yoga are well-documented. Yoga is good for your body, mind, and spirit, and can lead to improved wellness in all three areas. Anyone can do yoga, regardless of age or experience, and Yoga Spirit Studios welcomes beginners to our yoga classes. One thing we understand about all of our clients, regardless of skill level, is the importance of teaching them to practice yoga safely and correctly to avoid injury and maximise benefits. For optimal safety while participating in yoga, follow these tips.
Think Like a Beginner
You wouldn’t take an advanced kickboxing or ballet class without first learning the basics. Yoga is no different. If you’re a beginner, look for a class tailored to beginners, such as one of our classes that teach yoga for beginners in the Adelaide western suburbs. These classes introduce you to the basics in a systematic way, helping you build a foundation of knowledge before you move on to a more advanced level.
Listen to Your Body
Your instructor will be your teacher and guide, but your body will teach you just as much. Pay attention to the signals your body sends you. If something doesn't feel right or hurts, you're probably pushing too hard; ease out of the pose. If you need a break, you can always relax in child's pose.
Remember that Everyone Is Different
Don't worry if your neighbour seems to be doing "better" than you. Your pose doesn't need to look like anyone else's; in fact, everyone looks different performing the same poses. Your body is unique, so honour its signals and do what feels right to you. Yoga is about getting in tune with your body, so practice poses in a way that honours what your body can do, not what someone else can do.
Don’t Be Afraid to Push Yourself – To a Point
If every pose you try seems easy, you might not be pushing yourself hard enough. Look for the sweet spot in each pose where you are challenging yourself, but not to the point of pain or discomfort. You should feel your muscles working and stretching, but if you feel fatigue, strain, or pain, ease up.
Choose the Right Teacher
Yoga classes vary widely in approach and style. If you have questions about which class is right for you, ask questions to find out whether a particular session will be suitable for you. If you have any specific conditions, be sure to mention them to the teacher and make sure they agree that the class is still a good fit for you. If you are a beginner, look for a class such as one of ours that teaches yoga for beginners in the Adelaide western suburbs.
At Yoga Spirit Studios, you can feel confident that you are in good hands with the best-trained teachers who hold to high professional standards and will keep you safe. It’s always our goal to make yoga accessible to everyone by encouraging each client to honour their uniqueness, and we can also teach modifications to make your yoga perfect for you, not someone else.
