What really is ‘healthy ageing’? While we can’t necessarily control all the factors of ageing such as genetics and past experience, yoga offers us many opportunities to foster well-being throughout our life span.
This therapeutic yoga series with Cherise Vallet will take you on a fun and meaningful exploration of our multi-faceted selves through the lens of ageing in the healthiest way possible, no matter your present condition. We’re all going this direction, so we might as well find out the most delightful ways to do it!
While each week of this series of 2-hour sessions will build on the previous one, you may also just choose what appeals or piques your curiosity the most. After all, curiosity is a key attitude in keeping the mind in a youthful and open state. So join for all four sessions or just what appeals, you are welcome either way.
No prior yoga experience necessary. At the end of this series you will have a rich choice of practices, and experience using them. Practice notes provided each week.
WEEK 1: Yoga and Neuromuscular Ageing
Some of the key features that a regular physical yoga practice can offer include strength, flexibility, mobilisation of all our joint complexes, and dynamic balance. The old adage of ‘use it or lose it’ definitely applies here.
WEEK 2: Yoga and Stress Management
Our nervous system is set up to help us weather the ups and downs of life, and yoga can be used to bring calm when needed, and lift our energy when it feels low. We will focus on specific use of our most portable stress-management tool of all: the breath.
WEEK 3: Yoga and Our Mind/Heart Complex
Besides cardiovascular and brain/nervous system health, yoga gives tools to be with our mind and heart in a mindful way, even in difficult times. Yoga poses, some hand mudras, and meditations will be part of this session.
WEEK 4: Yoga and Our Legacy of Wisdom
To recognise that growing older is not becoming less is a gift that yoga can give. Meditation, visualisation, & reflection practices will be used to expand into the realm of heart and spirit, broaden perspective, and cultivate equanimity and wisdom.
Your teacher: Cherise Vallet is a trained yoga therapist, as well as a registered teacher of the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Course. She is also a senior teacher with Yoga Australia. Cherise specialises in teaching yoga and meditation techniques that support calm, resilience, and healthy choices in living. She’s a baby boomer herself, and finds this whole process of getting older sometimes a drag (as in the Rolling Stones song), but mostly an intriguing adventure.
